Election results: voters need a real alternative
The Social Justice group is satisfied with the results of NSW state election last Saturday. Despite all obstacles which included threats, physical attacks on group’s members and property and almost total mainstream media blackout of the group’s work, voters’ response was positive. The informal vote was doubled in many seats the group campaigned in.

“All opinion polls before and on the election day showed that the overwhelming majority of voters in NSW were dissatisfied with both major parties. On the other hand, the small parties could not convince the voters as alternative political forces” said Jamal Daoud, the spokesperson of the group. “On the contrary, the voting for the Greens and Democrats was decreased in many seats, as a sign of poor performance and failure to convince voters of benefits of voting for them”

“Leaders of both major parties admitted voters’ unhappiness and dissatisfaction through the campaign and on the night of election”

“Labor’s victory was merely because of lack of credible and strong opposition. The Liberal party was in such disarray that its leader was conceeding defeat weeks before the election day”

“On the other hand, the Greens, who should have received a lot of votes because of this dissatisfaction, could not convince the voters of being a credible alternative force. Its performance was very poor. Despite the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on TV and media advertisements, the party did not increase its vote. Rather in many parts of NSW, like seats of Auburn, Lakemba, Bankstown and Granville, the voting for the Greens was reduced dramatically, sometimes halving their last result”

The election results are very clear indication that a large section of voters in NSW have lost hope in any of the current political parties.

It is very clear that the time is approaching for a new political force to represent the marginalized groups and progressive voters who are expecting more from the Left parties. The group will announce in a few weeks time its plan to achieve part of this dream.
