With yesterday’s revelation of wrongful detention of Australian residents for years, it is very clear that there is need to establish a royal commission to close the dark chapter of the immigration department’s inhumane practices.
“We are well aware of many highly inhumane cases of this particular department’s officials abusing their power in countless ways. Some of these include delaying visas processing, refusing visa grant on false grounds and allegations, many cases of stateless people who lived in Australia for many years with no prospect of solving their dilemmas, and many more inhumane practices” said Jamal Daoud, spokesperson of Social Justice Network.
“These examples of misconduct have resulted in deep mental problems of innocent people who committed no crime and yet have been punished so harshly”
“These recent revelations are very good evidence that what the department is suffering from is a culture of disregard to basic human rights, with no prospect of any punishment or being accountable for these practices”
“We deeply believe that a Royal Commission with full powers to investigate this misconduct will reveal many serious crimes against innocent people committed by DIAC’s officials and case managers. But we deeply believe that such a Commission with full power is vital to clean this particular department of this regressive culture”
“The culture we refer to includes a culture of lying and cover up, suspecting any non- English speaking person of being criminal (an illegal immigrant at least), feeling of immunity from any accountability and a culture of deep racism and discrimination”
The very low amount of money offered to Mr Van, in comparison to money granted to others in similar cases, is very clear evidence of such culture. Mr Van was offered less than $60,000. In comparison, Ms Cornelia Rau was granted more than $2.5 millions for detaining her illegally for lesser period of time. We can genuinely ask if this huge difference of compensation was related to the different skin colour of both. Or maybe it is related to the mother tongue of Mr Van, compared to the European origin of Ms Rau.
The case of Mr Van Nguyen is not unique in its nature. We are aware of tens of cases involving deep negligence and neglect to basic rights (even according to DIAC laws and regulations) that have resulted in deep mental health problems to innocent people. The case of Ms Lina Hamdan, whose visa grant was delayed for 4 years for no reason, is a clear example of such culture.
We deeply believe that if the Labor government is keen to get rid of such inhumane practices, the Minister will not hesitate to form the royal commission. He also needs to get rid of the senior bureaucrats he inherited from the previous deeply regressive Liberal government.
In this instance we should mention that we have provided the minister with names and details of tens of such cases. We are more than ready to keep cooperating with the minister’s office to expose these practices and names of people affected by such regressive inhumane practices.

The Greens refusal to support means test for health insurance rebate: condemned act of political prostitution.
By refusing to support means test for health insurance rebate, the Australian Greens today showed its true colour of pure opportunism and lack of any commitment towards any issues affecting marginalised communities. The suggested means test will affect only rich people and would save billions of dollars to be spent on other important services.
“While we note that the Greens was jumping up and down demanding abolishing of this rebate since its introduction, when the chance has risen to achieve large proportion of this demands, the Greens senators chose to side against own policy” said Jamal Daoud, spokesperson for Social Justice Network. “Such move could not be interpreted but an act of political prostitution to achieve hidden agendas”
“If the Greens want the voters keep voting for this party, they should stick to their promises and policies. The voters should have doubt over any claim, promise or policy announced by this party”
“We note that this is not the first backflip against own policy. Last month, the Greens voted down proposed government scheme on climate change reduction”
On all levels, the Greens party is the least credible party in Australian politics. There were many backflips on state level, local government level and federal level.
“Some examples of these backlips include Greens Auburn councillor decision to support approving high-rise buildings and her support of demolition of heritage listed buildings, against clear Greens policies on these issues”
The SJN is committed to fight such acts of political prostitution. This would definitely include campaign to exposé these backflips as a clear evidence of lacking clear principled agendas. The SJN is committed to fight for fair go for poor people by supporting abolishing the rebate altogether.
We believe that public money should be spent on public hospitals to afford quality medical attention to each citizen, especially the poor who cannot afford private health insurance.

Open letter to Auburn Mayor: your racist comments are disgrace beyond imagination!
Dear Ms Irene Simms, Mayor of Auburn
We were deeply shocked to learn about your very racist comments to the media in regard to police raids on Auburn homes last Wednesday. You were quoted urging authorities to deport “these people”, even if they were born in Australia. It is safe to understand that your comments were about people from non-Anglo Saxon background.
These comments are highly offensive because of their racist nature. It is particularly offensive as it comes form the mayor of the most diverse and multicultural area in Australia. You have showed disregard to the feeling and dignity of the area you are supposed to represent.
We understand that your comments are directed to appease the racist elements in the area who are still dreaming of reversing the time back to the White Australia era. We understand that this was the mission behind the foundation of your group/local party.
Let me mention to you that if you are suggesting deporting the “bad guys” in the society, you should take into account that the majority of inmates in the gaol community are from Anglo-Saxon background. Or do you think that these Anglo-Saxons inmates do not have “contract with Australia” to “uphold our laws”!!!
We expected from you as the mayor of the area to stand up for your residents to ensure that they get fair treatment and equal access to natural justice. Instead of visiting Cumberland Street to ensure the respect of law by all sides, you were quick to meet with your racist counterparts on the night of raids. Then on the same night you were quick to convict the people arrested, without knowing the facts.
Let me tell you the facts now. The police made several abuse of power and acted outside their authorities. The police:
1- Did not have a search warrant to conduct such major operation.
2- Used excessive force against women and children.
3- Did not find any drugs or any large money sums in that particular house.
The whole raid turned to be no more than an exercise to terrorise the community and spread racism against it. And you were quick to use the opportunity to spread fear and division for cheap political gains.
As a politician, you should have taken some precautions before ridiculing yourself. Your racist suggestion is both impractical and out of your authority. But let me explain to you why your racist comments are in fact very naïve and ridiculous.
Your suggestion, if it is taken seriously by our politicians and authorities, will spread chaos and inhumanity beyond any imagination, trying to locate courtiers to take our inmates and “bad guys”.
We hope that you can stick to the responsibilities you are suppose to do: manage council resources. We hope that you can stay away from Federal and State issues, as you proved to be so ignorant to understand any. If you insist to do so, we would love to hear that you have an ambition to take Pauline Hanson’s role in the society.
It is very clear that racism has become an epidemic more contagious and deadly than the swine flu one. All progressive forces in the society need to take urgent actions to stop its deadly effects.

Social Justice Network to run candidates in the coming Federal election: Islamophobia and racism should not be used for political electoral gains!
With the spectacular media circus which accompanied arrests of Muslim youth in Melbourne and subseqent beat up of Islamophobia and racism drums, we are more sure now that the Labor government is preparing us for an early election based on these sentiments. With total silence from all opposition parties, including the so-called progressive ones, the SJN has decided to run candidates to challenge Islamophobia, racism and low represention of marginlised communites in our decison making bodies which usualy leads to such racist and discriminatory electoral platforms for mainstream parties dominated by Anglo-Saxon politicians.
The network candidates, while supporting any actions to strengthen the security of this great nation, will challenge the need for draconian laws to achieve this vital goal. The existing Anti-Terrorism laws combined with the proposed more draconian ones that will be presented to the parliament soon is infact a threat to our security and social cohesion.
“The racist and anti-Muslim feelings and sentements have started to be flourished in the society after this media circus”said Jamal Daoud, spokesperson of SJN. “Instead, the government could strengthen national society by addressing the social injustices in the society, including fighting against racism, Islamophobia, poverty and unemployment”
The network will campaign on giving marginalised communites a chance to voice their concerns– and in particular to highlight the failure of all exisiting manistream parties to give these communites any opportunity to participate in decision making processes that shape their lives in this country.
“The marginalised communites of indigenous people, newly arrived migrants, refugees and people with disabilities are absent from the federal parliament” said Jamal Daoud, spokesperson of the network. “Even though these marginalised communites make up more than 40% of the Australian population, their representation in the Federal parliament is nearly nil”.
“Even the so-called left progressive parties have failed to field any candidate from these marginalised communities in any safe or semi safe seat”
“Real multiculturalism and social justice in any society means that the marginalised people should be allowed to represent themselves in order to have a genuine say in the future of the nation they belong to and equal access to its resources and common wealth” added Mr Daoud. “By doing this, we can reduce the feelings of marginalisation & social isolation, feeling of hopelsness and being targeted by own society. Such moves are very importnat to reduce social tension and feeling of being second class citizen”
“By failing to stand up and fight against these highly regressive laws and draconian practices, which violate basic human rights of presumption of inncoence and rights to get fair trial, the exisiting parties, including the so-called progressive ones, are in fact part of the problem and definitely not part of the solution”
“The network is meeting with representatives of these marginalised communites to involve them with the campaign, including involving them in finalising the candidate names and seats they will run in. The campaign will be a highly multicultural and grass-rooted one”.
“The history of Australian political life is not so bright when it comes to use discriminatory claims and in involving the highly marginalised communites. This is why racism and discrimination were always high on the agenda for political campaigning throughout Australian history”
The network hopes from this campaign to give the marginalised communites hope of the possibility getting some share in politico-economic life of this nation. It is not acceptable that marginalised communites and their suffering be used continually as electoral slogans for some parties to gain more votes. If these parties are serious about its rhetoric, they should give some power and voice for these marginalised communites to lead the fight for their rights.
The network will announce later on the names of candidates and the seats they will run in. The main platform for the campaign would be promoting real Multiculturalism and the issues of low representation of marginalised people in decision making processes.
In the coming federal election, the Social Justic Network is advocating that citizens vote for those who have actually acted on issues, and not who just said nice words. The most important issues in many parts of Sydney is promotion of real multiculturalism. Real multiculturalism for us is not a code word. It is a practical commitment to equal participation in the decision making process”
